Title
A complete cast copper alloy key, dating to the 14th/ 15th century AD.
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy key with a lozenge/ diamond-shaped bow, comprising of a quatrefoil framework (with each of the four holes having an approximate diameter of 4mm) and collar just below (length: 91.6mm; width at bow: 35.7mm; thickness/ diameter of shank: 8.6mm; weight: 52.95g). There is a cylindrical loop separately soldered on to the top of the bow (diameter: 12.8mm; length: 8.9mm), which prtorudes outwards from both sides by approximately 4mm, possibly for attachment purposes. The key has a hollow and oval-sectioned shank (length: 59mm) with the complete bit (length: 20.8mm; width: 18.1mm) protruding outards from the bottom. The key is decorated. To the left and right of the bow/ head, there are integrally cast copper alloy knobs, as well as three roughly incised lines (approximate length: 2-3mm) between the four points of the head. There are also incised cross marks on the side knobs. These markings appear on both sides of the bow/ head. Below the collar and along the length of the shank, there are roughly incised lines circling in a 'V' design. The artefact is slightly worn, particularly near the bottom of the shank, and the key is in a good condition.

A number of similar examples are illustrated in the 'London Museum Medieval Catalogue', 1940, pages 140 & 142, plate XXIX. These date to the 14th/ 15th century AD.
