A complete post medieval copper alloy lace tag dating 16th -17th century |

Description |
English: A complete post medieval copper alloy lace tag dating 16th -17th century. This is a Type 2 lace tag - cylindrical in form, securing the lace along its length, with both edges folding inwards to grip the lace (Margeson 1993:22-23). There are no rivets nor decoration. One of the edges is only folded in at one end; the majority of its length is sitting flat against the outer surface of the lace tag.
Margeson (1993:22) writes: "lace-tags (or 'aiglets'), made of sheet copper alloy, were used to prevent the ends of laces fraying, and to ease threading, corresponding with the use of points for fastening doublets and hose, and the use of laces for various dress function from the 15th century onwards." Dimensions: length: 19.17mm; diameter at peak: 2.28mm; weight: 0.25g. Reference: Margeson, S.1993. Norwich Households: The Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds From Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-1978.
