_27^j*v/^. £-3 r.r/^ A MAJOR STREET PLAN The character and location of the streetsof any city are great factors in its growth.Streets usually constitute from twenty toforty per cent of a citys area; withoutcareful planning they may easily bringabout a tremendous economic waste. Theexpansion of the city in all directions isaffected principally by the character ofstreet connections that are afforded. Inadvance the city should plan main streetsin the direction in which it is expected ordesired that the city shall grow. There are three types of streets: (1)principal radial thoroughfares; (2) sec-ondary major streets; (3) minor streets.The principal radial streets are those af-fording direct short-line connections be-tween the business district and the severalresidential and industrial districts. Theprincipal radial streets should also connectwith the roads leading to surroundingcountry, to neighboring towns and cities.The secondary major streets are thoseaffording direct crosstown connec
