At Amsterdam it is nearly equal to 41English wine gallons, at Antwerp to 36£ ditto, atHamburgh to 38^ ditto, and at Frankfort to 39 ditto.It is principally used for wine and oil. TheAmsterdam Aam of oil contains about 36 gallons. ABACA. The Indian name of the hemp of thePhilippine Islands. (Hemp Manillas.) ABANDONMENT (Fr. delaissenient). InCommerce and Navigation, this term is used toexpress the abandoning or surrendering of the shipor goods insured to the insurer. It is held, by the law of England, that theinsured has the right to abandon, and to compelthe insurers to pay the whole value of the thinginsured, in every casa where, by the happeningof any of the misfortunes or perils insured against,the voyage is lost, or not worth pursuing, andthe projected adventure is frustrated ; or wherethe thing insured is so damaged and spoil
