. (W. H.) STONING. (Punishments.) STORK (nipn, chasklah: translated indif-ferently by LXX. affiSa, eiroif/. ipaiSios, ireXtKav:Vulg. herodio, herodius, milcus: A. V. stork, exeept in Job xxxix. 13, where it is translated wing ( stork in the margin). But there issome question as to the correct reading in thispiissage. The LXX. do not seem to have recognisedthe stork under the Hebrew term nTDH ; other-wise they could scarcely have missed the obviousrendering of ire\apy6s, or have adopted in two in-stances the phonetic representation of the original, acriSa (whence no doubt Hesych. &(rts, elSos op-veov). It is singular that a bird so conspicuousand familiar a-s the stork must have been both inEgypt and Palestine should have escaped notice bythe LXX., but there can be no doubt of the con-ect-ness of the rendering of A. V. The Heb. term isderived from the root 1011, whence IDH, kind-ness, from the maternal and filial atfectiou of whichthis bird has been in all ages the- type). SIORK 1383

alia) The White Stork (Ciconia alba, L.) is one of thelargest and most conspicuous of land birds, standingnearly foiu- feet high, the jet black of its wings andits bright red beak anil legs contiasting finely with the pure white of its phmiage (Zech. v. 9, Theyhad wings like the wings of a stork). It is placedby naturalists near the Heron tribe, with which ithas some affinity, forming a connecting link betweenit and the spoonbill and ibis, like all of which, thestork feeds on fish and reptiles, especially on thelatter. In the neighbourhood of man it devoursreadily all kinds of olTal and garbage. For thisreason, doubtless, it is placed in the list of uncleanbirds by the Mosaic law (Lev. xi. 19; Deut. xiv.18). The range of the white stork extends overthe whole of Europe, except the British Isles, whereit is now only a rare visitant, and over NorthernAfrica and Asia, as far at least as Birmah. The Black Stork (Ciconia nigra, L.), though lessabundant in places, is scarcely less widely dis
