Na-poleon ordered it in 1806to be rededicated to publicworship, but in the absenceof funds it still continuedto be used as a store-house.In 1822 it was completelyrestored by the assistanceof the king Maximilian, andagain devoted to its sacredpurposes. The crypt, under thetransept and choir, is in allrespects the same as it wasin 1039; the choir, withthe two E. towers, belongsprobably to a date sub-sequent to 1068, while theupper parts of the churchare believed to have beenerected after a fire in 1159.The whole edifice is a grandand massive, but simplespecimen of the Romanesquestyle. The Front of the cathedral was newly constructed fromthe designs of the eminent architect Hiibsch of Carlsruhe in1854—58, as well as the W. spire (225 ft.) and the Kaiser-Halle (Imperial Hall).
