row goldband round the waist, black furred gown, large lace collar andcuffs; glove with embroidered gauntlet grasped in gloved righthand, left hand holding black hat and resting on table, on whichis a Turkey carpet.1 Shield of arms on his left at the top:Argent, on a cross sable 5 lis of the first. Crest: out of a ducalcoronet or 3 lilies argent conjoined in one stalk, leaved andseeded of the first. Inscription on his right: Anno Dom: 1629 eo temporis Rectorvenerabilis Societatis MercatorumScissorum. Canvas, 48 inches high x 40 inches.Purchased for the Company in 1894. This picture was formerly in the collection of HoraceWalpole, who, in his Anecdotes of Painting, writes : I havetwo portraits by him (Janssens) of singular merit, one of Mr.Leneve, Master of the Merchant Taylors Company, and the other 1 This is possibly the faire Turkey Carpett bought by the Company in1604 for the table in the Kings Chamber and specified in the Inventories of1609 and 16l 8 as a large Pertia carpett. 102

of Sir George Villiers, father of the great Duke of Buckingham.1At the famous Strawberry Hill sale in 1842 this picture was soldfor 34 guineas to Mr. Downe (who also bought two portraits bySir Peter Lely of Alderman Leneve and his wife), and subse-quently passed into the possession of Sir Hugh Hume Campbell,at the sale of whose collection at Christies Sale-rooms onJune 16, 1894, it was purchased for the Company. At a Court held on June 21, 1894, the Master (RaymondH. Thrupp) reported the purchase by Mr. Warden Ewart2 onbehalf of the Company of a portrait of Francis Le Neve,Master of the Company in 1629, by C. Janssen, when the actionof Mr. Warden Ewart was approved and it was ordered that asum not exceeding £105 be granted to cover the cost of thepicture—£99 15s.—and incidental expenses. Lent to the Old Masters Exhibition at the Royal Academy,1896, and there numbered 130.3 Third son of Francis Neave, or Le Neve, and Margaret hiswife, of Whittyngham, otherwise Witchingham, Norfol
