rtholomewsHospital, the Court and Livery of the Merchant Taylors 1 Nicholas Reynardson established almshouses at Tottenham. 2 This house, which he had purchased in 1639, was built in 1590, andremained standing till 1810. 3 The two silver flagons which he gave to this church in the year of hismayoralty were stolen in 1809. 87 Company, and a great number of his relations, friends, andacquaintances. No monument appears to have been erected tohis memory. He had estates in London, Middlesex, and Harlowin Essex.i The family is now represented by the Birch-Reynardsons of Holliwell Hall, Stamford, Lincolnshire, in whose possessionis a similar portrait. A grant of arms was made to Reynardson in 1C32, as follows :Or, two chevrons engrailed gules, on a canton of the second amascle argent. ROBERT GRAY Painter unknown.1 Three-quarter length, life-size, standing slightly to his left,looking at spectator; grey pointed beard; red velvet brocadedress, with narrow gold band round the waist, black furredgown, broad lace collar and cuffs ; right hand hanging down, lefthand holding gold-embroidered gloves and resting on a table;shield of arms at top to his right: Barry of six argent and azure,on a bend gules three chaplets or. Crest: a badger proper.Inscription to his left, ^etatis suae 59 anno 1633. 2 Canvas, 44 inches high x 35 inches. The picture was painted in the year in which Gray wasexcused service as Master (see below), but no mention of itsacquisition has been found in the Court Records or Accounts.It is first referred to at a Court held on December 4, 1639, whenit was ordered that the picture of Mr. Robert Gray late anancient Master (sic) and worthy benefactor of this Company (inremembrance of the said Robert Gray and his charitable gifts)shall be set up in the Hal
