The Invasion of Julius Caesar (b.c. 55).—It was notuntil the first century of the Christian era that Britain wasbrought definitely into contact with the beneficent and civilisinginfluence of Rome, and that it became possible for the reignof law, which everywhere followed the Imperial standards, toextend its sway over the restless and disorganised tribes whichoccupied our island.
