The principal part of the village is on and near the main road on the left bankof the river, but St. Marys Church, the rectory,Court House and Court Farm lie together on theright bank. Overton station is about half a milenorth of the village. To the south of the station isQuidhampton, where the River Test forms a largepond. The old farm-house here was originally themanor-house of Quidhampton. Further east by theriver is Polhampton, originally Pool-hampton Farm,1marking the site of the manor of Polhampton. Laverstoke : Old Parish Church, now Mortuary Chapel of the Portal Family OVERTON HUNDRED OVERTON down Court near the eastern boundary of the parishis the residence of Mr. Edward Ernest Cooper. Thehamlet of Southington with Southington House, theresidence of Lieut.-Col. Bertram Percy Portal, D.S.O.,is situated about a quarter of a mile west of thevillage on the main road, while the hamlet ofNorthington lies the other side of the river on thewestern borders of the parish. The ground is low-lying on the banks of the river, but quickly rises bothtowards the north and south, heights of 576 ft. and484 ft. above the ordnance datum being registeredin the north and south respectively. The subsoil ischalk. About two-thirds of the parish is arable land,about a sixth pasture and a sixth woodland.2 The chiefcrops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips.
