At the secondcall for three months volunteers he enlisted and waswith the Eighty-fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, andlater served twenty months in the Fifth Ohio Volun-teer Cavalry in Company F, being discharged withthe rank of sergeant. Not long after the war Mr. Keesey set out for theSouthwest. Leaving his old home at Steubenville, Ohio,February 5, 1867, he found employment under GeneralJ. S. Mason in the care of his two small boys as theywere then, and also three horses. The little party ar-rived at San Antonio March 6, and on May 25, 1867,there being no railroads in that section of Texas, Gen-eral Mason secured for young Keesey a position asbaker to accompany the troops to Fort Davis, thenunder command of General Wesley Merritt. The dis-tance of four hundred and seventy-five miles from SanAntonio to Fort Davis was accomplished in a journeyby wagon roads in thirty-one days.
