Many towers now serving as campaniles for churches had also amore or less military or civic character. The tower of San Fredianoat Lucca (see Fig. 204), dating from the early part of the twelfth cen-tury, has a flat roof protected by the forked battlements of the Ghi-bellines, and was doubtless availed of in case of need for the purposeof defence. The great tower of Cremona, called the Torazzo, thehighest in Italy, rising three hundred and ninety-six feet above thepavement, was built in 1283, to celebrate the conclusion of a peacebetween Cremona, Florence, Milan, and Brescia.
