C.J.) BR(JA;i\\ AV (1S9S) BUILDING AND ARCHITECTURE IN NEW YORK. 701 sitions were largely heavy constructive work, in which warehousesand coal pockets and similar structures entered largely. In the nextfew years dwellings, municipal and business buildings formed a largeshare of the work. As an example of Mr. Kings free treatment ofFrench Renaissance the mercantile building No. 625 Broadway isprobably one of the best. It is a twelve-story store, loft and officebuilding, of skeleton construction. The foundations are of canti-lever construction and heavy grill work. The Broadway front isof limestone, while the Wooster street front is of light brick, trimmedwith limestone. The ground floor, in which a restaurant is located, iselaborately finished in mosaics and marble, with a special design infrieze work. While the treatment is free a good effect is produced. He is the architect for the new ten-story building now in processof erection at the northeast corner of Fifth avenue and 20th stree
