Storm raging — equal to Hatteras — ran oftthecoast. 15th. One of the blockading Gunboats oft Mobile Baysignalled us. We had no answers, so she ftred a shotacross our bows and Capt. hove to quick. She hailed,found us out and kept close to all day. Mar. i6th. Sunday — Oft Mobile Ba\ in a calm.Two o-unboats and a sermon. 17th. Ran down opposite Ship Island and laid toin a bracing wind. 18th. Ran in and anchored in the forenoon. Com-menced to unload. The men got on shore. 19th and 20th. Set up tents and got oft provisions.Gen. Butler arrived on Steamer Mississippi.. Four companies, viz.. A, F, H, and K, were left behindat Fort Independence, to come on in the ship Eliza andElla, in charge of Lieutenant-Colonel Lull, AssistantSurgeon EUery C. Clarke going with them—SurgeonSamuel G. Dearborn being on the E. W. Farley. Aninteresting incident was, that one soldier who was to gowith the six companies on the Farley, suddenly died, andin the hurry of the departure was left without burial.
