Ephrata. Its founding dates from 1732. Andnow began an influx of discontented or awakenedspirits from all parts of Eastern Pennsylvania, andEphrata became a growing colony. Beissel was su-preme once more. Beissel now began an active system of religious vis-its to the various settlements to win con\erts. He wasartful and possessed of such remarkable enthusiasmthat he was usuall) successful. At Ealkners Swamp.Conestoga, Co\-cntry, Germantown, Oley, and Tulpe-hocken he drew to himself numerous followers. Inthe Tulpehocken region he succeeded in winning thefamous Conrad Weiser, in many respects the most re-markable German in Colonial America,(^ and thelearned Peter Miller, minister of the Reformed churchat Tulpehocken. (1) Weiser was the father-in-law of Kev. Henry M. He was a g-raduate of Heidelberg University,a man of profound erudition, and a finished scholar.He crossed the Atlantic on the ship, Thistle, ColinDunlap, Master, and landed in Philadelphia, August29, I730.() Rev. Jedediah Andrews says of him, Heis an extraordinary person for sense and learning.His name is John Peter Miiller, and speaks Latin asreadily as we do our native tongue. He is, saysAcrelius,(2) a learned man, understands the Orientallanguages, speaks Latin, discusses theological contro-versies as well as other sciences. Auiograpli of Peter Miller.
