t three inches and a half long, veryflexible, which hang behind, and move with eachmovement of the birds head. The bottom of the in-ferior part of the neck is covered with black feathers. 32 IS^UMIDIAN CRANE. which are lengthened, and terminate in very flexiblepoints, some of them are nine inches long, and hangover the crop. The primaries are ash-coloured on theirbasal, and black on their distal halves; the secondariesare of an ashy hue, those nearer the body being longand pointed, and, when the wing is shut, reach to theend of the primaries. The tail consists of twelvefeathers, bluish ash, terminated with blackish. Irisbrilliant red. The beak is green at its origin, yellowtowards the middle, and red at its extremity. Thenaked part of the thighs, tarsi, feet, and claws black. In the female the colours are less pure, and thetufts on the side of the head shorter. My figure of this bird is after Gould. It has also been figured by Edwards, pi. 134; Buifon,pi. enl. 241; and Gould, pi. 272.

Specific Characters.—Sides of the head covered with a nakedskin in the form of ear-lobes; a membrane (not much extended)under the neck. Length from end of beak to tip of tail two feetnine inches, to end of toes three feet eight inches. It is witli mucli hesitation that I have admitted thisbird into the European list, and I only do so as adoubtful species.
