nd nearly all the tail of abluish ash; a large black band at the end of the tailfeathers, which are tipped with white; throat light; theother under parts of a clear reddish russet, studded withsmall spots and longitudinal black streaks. Feet, claws,cere, and eyelids, yellow; beak bluish. The old female is rather larger; she so nearlyresembles in the colour of her plumage the femaleof the Kestrel, that it is impossible to distinguish themin a description; they would however, be known fromeach other at the first glance; first, by the very smallsize, and, secondly, by the length of the quill feathers,which reach to the end of the tail. The young males of the year differ but slightly fromthe old female. 50 LESSER KESTREL. The egg of this hircl is from a drawing kindly sentme by M. Moquin-Tandon. The egg from which thedrawing is made was supplied to M. Moquin-Tandonby M. Parreys, of Vienna. Eadeker, (Die Eier derEurop., Vog., pi. 10, fig. 4,) has represented six vari-eties of this species.
