Title
A late Medieval - early Post Medieval lead tin alloy shoe buckle
Description
English: A late Medieval - early Post Medieval lead tin alloy shoe buckle dating AD1350-1550. This is a double oval buckle; the frame has a circular cross-section. There is a constriction around the middle of the central bar to accommodate the pin; the pin is missing.

Egan & Pritchard (1991:86-7) list similar examples which they describe as plain frames for shoes, they all came from contexts dating AD1350-1450. The authors write, "they seem to have been used regularly for pattens (open-style footwear in which two leather side elements are joined by straps across the instep)". Egan (2005:35) illustrates further example, this time the frame is described as oval with a central bar. This buckle was found in a context dated AD1500-1550.

Dimensions: length: 21.81mm; width: 18.24mm; thickness: 2.35mm; weight: 3.29g.
