^ be occasionally re-duced by attempts made in a very inappropriate direction, yet thefollowing case will show the mischief which may occasionally arisefrom an error in this respect. I once saw the following instance. Aboy, sixteen years old, had a dislocation of the thigh into the foramenovale ; he was placed upon his sound side, and an extension of thesuperior part of the thigh was made perpendicularly. The surgeonthen pressed down the knee, but the thigh being at that momentadvajiced, the head of the bone was thrown backward, and passedinto the ischiatic notch;, from which situation it could not afterwardsbe reduced.
