Text Appearing Before Image:
Diagram of a vertical section of the mucous membrane of the small intestine of adog, showing the closed follicles, a a; b, muscularis mucosag. (Peyers glands, or agminated glands, consist .of groups of lymph-follicles likethe foregoing (Fig. 153). The masses are often more or less fused together, theirbases lie in the sub-mucosa, while their summits project into the mucosa, wherethey are covered merely by the columnar epithelium of the intestine. Thelymph-corpuscles often project between the epithelium. The patches so formedhave their long axis in the axis of the intestine, and they are always placedopposite the attachment of the mesentery. Like the solitary glands, they arewell supplied with blood-vessels, while around them is a dense plexus of lymphaticsor lacteals. They are most abundant in the lower part of the ileum. Theseglands are specially affected in typhoid fever.)
Text Appearing After Image:
Auerbachs plexus shown in section (human)—a, ganglionic cells; b, nerve fibres;c, section of the circular muscular fibres; d, longitudinal muscular fibres. 392 STRUCTURE OF THE LARGE INTESTINE. Nerves Of the Intestine.—Thoughout the whole intestinal tract, there existsthe plexus myentericus of Auerbach (Fig. 154), lying between the longitudinaland circular muscular coats. This plexus consists of non-medullated nerves with groups of ganglionic cells at the nodes. Fibresare given off by it to the muscular coats. Connected by branches with the foregoing andlying in the sub-mucosa, is the plexus ofMeissner, which is much finer, the meshes being wider, thenodes smaller, but also provided with ganglioniccells. It supplies the muscular fibres and arteriesof the mucosa, including those of the villi. Italso supplies branches to Lieberkiihns glands(Drasch).—Compare Figs. 131 and 132. (Structure of the Large Intestine.—It hasfour coats like those of the small intestine. Theserous coat has
