THROMBOSIS OF THE SIGMOID AND OTHERSINUSES. Before describing the symptoms of sinus thrombosis,it is impoitant to review in a general way the grossanatomy of the brain, particularly as to its venous supply. The superior cerebral veins collect the blood from theupper portions of the cerebrum, and after anastomosingwith one another and the inferior cerebral veins emptyinto the superior longitudinal sinus. The inferiorcerebral veins enter the lateral, cavernous, and superiorpetrosal sinuses. The middle cerebral vein, after beingjoined by branches from the frontal and temporo-sphe-noidal lobes, pours its blood into the cavernous sinus. The sigmoid sinus is a continuation of the lateral sinus, and is that portion which lies in the sigmoid groove. Fig. 109.

The lateral and sigmoid sinuses, together with the internal jugular vem, are of especialinterest to the aural surgeon, for it is in these vesselsthat a thrombus is most frequently found when themiddle ear and mastoid cells are involved, although theother sinuses that are in communication with them areliable to be affected, especially the superior and inferiorpetrosals. Small veins from the mastoid cells and tympanumalso enter the sigmoid sinus, more especially at thatpoint called the knee or the anterior convexity of thesinus. A mastoid vein joins the sigmoid sinus at itsposterior aspect, and is frequently thrombosed when theformer is involved. A thrombus forming in the sigm
