Text Appearing Before Image:
ing at this imaginary line a broadlayer of peritoneum passes down over the anterior wall of thewomb to the level of a point midway between the internaland external os, when it turns up and is reflected over theposterior wall of the bladder: this is the anterior broad liga-ment. A similar fold passes down over the posterior wall ofthe womb, going low enough to cover the upper one-fifth of theposterior vaginal wall (as already explained), when it turnsup and is reflected over the anterior wall of the rectum: thisis the posterior broad ligament. Thus the uterus, with (andbetween) its two broad ligaments, forms a sort of transversepartition to the pelvic cavity; the bladder, urethra, etc.,beingin the front compartment, and the rectum in the back one. BROAD LIGAMENTS OF THE UTERUS. 00 The lateral borders of this double ligamentous curtain areattached to the sides of the pelvis, and hence these ligamentsare sometimes called right and left, instead of anteriorand posterior, as above. Fig. 10.
