Title
a medieval casket key
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy casket key, London Museum Catalogue type 5, dating from AD1200-1400. The bow is broken, but was probably sub-circular with a small, internal projection where the bow meets the shaft. Between the bow and the circular shaft is a rectangular collar. Both collar and shaft are solid. The shaft tapered to a point, but this has broken away and is missing. The bit depends from the centre of the shaft and is separated from it by a narrow groove on each side. It consists of an openwork rectangle above six small, equal sized, rectangular wards. The key has a dark brown patina. It is 34mm long, 14.5mm wide and 5.3mm thick. It weighs 4.18gm.

A similar key is illustrated in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue, plate XXX, number 26.
