A medieval cast copper-alloy casket key, late 12th to early 14th century.
Description
English: A medieval cast copper-alloy casket key, late 12th to early 14th century. This key has a circular bow, a hollow stem (filled with mud) and a simple bit with two clefts, one on either side. Surface abraded and speckled with a dark and lighter green patina. It measures 37.38mm long, 11.7mm wide at the bow, 10.02mm wide at the bit and it weighs 4.61g. Similar casket keys can be found in Read, B. 2001. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, Volume 1, Page 67, 71-72, ref. 544-556.
