Title |
A modern trial for a Post Medieval button mould |
||
Description |
English: A Post Medieval half a stone mould for pewter buttons (18h century onwards). The mould is multi-faceted on the reverse and on the front there are three button fronts carved with grooves to allow the distribution of the lead. Each button has the same pattern of an anchor. On the upper two corners are carved holes for the posts; they do not project the entire thickness of the mould. The mould is broken across both the post holes. There are no notches to secure a binding around the two halves of the complete mould.
Geoff Egan suggested this is a button mould rather than one for tokens due to the quality and uniformity of the carving. He also stated this buttons were most likely naval. The finder has cast a replica from the mould, image attached. Dimensions: diameter of token: 15.25mm; length: 59.00mm; width: 54.47mm; thickness: 17.68mm; weight: 106.20g. Identification by Geoff Egan, PAS Finds Advisor Medieval and Post Medieval Artefacts. |
