There waslittle more than a skirmish line on a good part of theground. From the Harding pike to the river belowNashville, more than two miles, there were less thanfifteen hundred cavalry. The attack was begun atthis point with seven thousand Federal cavalry. Thewhole Confederate line repulsed the attacking forceson the first day, except the then thin line of infantryon the right of and across the Harding pike.
