Hooker had accomplished all of these move-ments, and had fortified himself in a strong positionacross the turnpike and plank road at Chancellors-ville, eleven miles from Fredericksburg, in order tocut off the Confederates anticipated retreat in the di-rection of Gordonsville. Gen. Lee soon discoveredthat the Federals had crossed the river at Kellys andEllis Fords. Gen. Wrights Brigade was ordered tosupport the Confederate forces, eight thousand innumber, under Gen. Anderson, Posey and Mahoneguarding the approaches to Fredericksburg in thatdirection. During the night of April 29 Gen. Leehimself, with Andersons and McLaws Divisions,took a position in front of the Federals, while he sentGen. Jackson to get in their rear. Andersons andMcLaws Divisions, and they retreated toward theriver. There w^as now a lull in the battle, Gen. Stu-art took command. Gens. Jackson and Hill both hav-ing been wounded. In accordance with instructionsfrom the former, Gen. Stuart continued to batter theFederals right wing. For a while they rested, theseold veterans, the blue and the gray. Sunday morn-ing the battle was renewed by the Confederates mak-ing a charge upon the fortifications and rifle pits ofthe Federals. The Confederates now seemed to beon the point of a great victory, and Gen. Lee movedhis forces to the plank road above Chancellorsville.But while thus successful in this portion of their lines,the Confederates were defeated at Fredericksburg,where Barksdales Brigade and Earlys Division held aposition extending from
