ument was laid in an angle of theold redoubt on Breeds hill. The base,a mass of fourteen thousand tons weight,is laid thirteen feet deep, and has sixcourses of stone to the surface, the firstof which is fifty feet on each side. Abovethis a pyramidal obelisk, thirty feetsquare, rises tapering, two hundred andthirteen feet four inches on the Ofround,and fifteen feet at the top. It is com-posed of eighty courses of stone, egchtwo feet eight inches thick. A windingstone staircase in the inside leads to thesummit, whence the view is fine andhighly interesting. The whole is builtof granite from Quincy. The largestblock in it is said to be eleven feet \in\^,two broad, and two feet eight indieshigh, with a weight of ten tons.
