Cooperstown is deservedly admiredby travellers, and annually the resort ofcitizens, seeking the pleasures of thecountry in the summer season. Thepopulation however is small, the num-ber of dwelling-houses beingonly abouta hundred and sixty. Tiie people aredistinguished for their refinement andcourteous manners. Left to the steady but slowimprovement of an agricultural neigh-borhood, it presents fewer evidences ofincrease in wealth or numbers, but isless liable to some of the evils incidentto many other places. There are a few small manufactoriesalong the banks of the outlet of thelake, where about eight thousand spin-dles are employed in cotton-spinning,and on that of Oak creek, one of thenumerous small streams in this county,most of which flow southward into theSusquehannah.
