One of the few still left to Plymouth is the oldthree-decker Impregnable, which is moored almost underthe shadow of Mount Edgcumbe. She was one of thelast wooden ships built for the British Navy, and afterconstruction was towed round to Devonport, where shehas been continuously used as a training-ship. Hertimbers, could they speak, would tell a tale of usefulservice to the Navy rather than of glorious deeds. Nearthe Impregnable are some ships of the DevonportDivision of the Home Fleet, all kept in readiness for seaat the call of duty. The modern battleship and the oldthree-decker moored in close proximity represent insome measure the great developments which have takenplace since Nelson, in just such another vessel as theImpregnable, won his great and final triumph in TrafalgarBay.
