Title |
a post medieval shoe or knee buckle |
||
Description |
English: A post medieval, cast copper alloy, rectangular shoe or knee buckle, dating from 1690-1720AD. The buckle frame is curved and the longer edges are thicker in the centre, where they are drilled to take a separate, ferrous spindle. This spindle has broken away from the rest of the buckle. It carries a copper alloy, openwork anchor chape in the shape of a truncated triangle with convex inner sides. The outer edge of the chape carries a single, inward pointing, triangular spike. There is a single, triangular tongue on the opposite side of the spindle. The buckle is undecorated and displays a patchy, dark green patina. It is 34.2mm long, 26.6mm wide and 7.8mm thick. It weighs 6.5gm.
An identical buckle is illustrated in Whitehead, 2003, Buckles, 1250-1800, page 103, number 662. |
