Title
a post medieval spindle whorl
Description
English: A cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date, AD 1200 - 1600. The whorl is plano-convex with a thick median band which also forms a slight collar round each face. There is little visible decoration, but one surviving raised pellet suggests that there may have originally been more before wear smoothed them. There is a small, oval indentation on the inner wall of the central perforation. This looks deeper and to have steeper sides than the usual hollow caused by contraction of the metal as the casting cools. It may be an air bubble. The whorl is 22.6mm in diameter and 10.9mm thick. It weighs 26.11gm. The central perforation has a diameter of 9.38mm.
