This fossa is frequently theseat of the primary sore of syphilis, and shouldalways be inspected before touching the vulva.That portion of the pelvic floor situated betweenthe posterior commissure and the anus is termedthe perineum. i6 GYNECOLOGY FOR NURSES The intermediate organ of generation is thevagina. This is a musculomembranous canalwhich connects the vulva with the uterus. The walls of the vagina lie closely applied.The anterior wall is in relation with the urethraand base of the bladder; the posterior wall, withthe perineal body, rectum, and peritoneum. The mucous membrane lining the vagina isthrown into folds and is covered with many layersof squamous epithelium; it contains no glands.The vagina is the normal habitat of the lactic-acidbacillus of Doderlein; this bacillus gives to thevaginal secretion its acid reaction and germicidal BectufttL.

Inthe virgin it measures three inches long, one andone-half inches wide, and one inch thick. The vagina is attached to thecervix a little below the isthmus. The anterior surface of the uterus rests uponthe bladder. The upper border, which is broadand thick, is called the fundus.
