l-Bohngbroke. )jam pulteney, a brilliant orator whom Walpole hadcompelled to leave the ministry. But the intellectual chief ofthese Patriots, as they called themselves, was Lord Bolingbroke. After the accession of the Hanoverians, Bolingbroke found itunsafe to remain in England, and early in 1715 he fled to theContinent and joined the Pretender, whom he served for afew months as secretary of state.2 Realizing that the cause ofthe Stuarts was not likely to succeed, he lost interest in his newsovereign and made plans to return to England. Soon afterhis flight he had been attainted by parliament; but in 1723, twoyears after the beginning of Walpoles rule, he was pardoned,though not restored to his seat in the house of lords.
