Title |
A single looped cast copper alloy buckle, dating from the late early-medieval to medieval period (10th to 12th century). |
||
Description |
English: A single looped cast copper alloy buckle, dating from the late early-medieval to medieval period (10th to 12th century). The strap bar is very narrow, whilst the D-shaped frame is wide with a circular section. There is a notch for the pin, but the pin is missing. The frame is very thick, 8.85mm. An integral moulded decoration projects from either side of the buckle frame. The detail is unclear however it is possibly stylised representation of an animal head. Below the buckle bar there are two more projections which are tail-end Urnes style. It has a dark green patina and is in good condition.
An exact parallel is unknown for this object, however the style of the buckle is similar to the style of Early Medieval buckles with two animals biting the strap bar such as DENO-8E90B8 or YORYM-FDCB12. The object can also be compared to the Early-Medieval swivel-fittings such as HAMP-1ECD73 and WMID4110. |
