Notice the lilac used for the deathbed in the lowest picture, and also the grouping.In the central panel there is a fine toss to theangels wings, and in them an adroit combinationof lilac, red, and other contrasting tints. In thecoronation scene, the broad golden bench servesto centralize ones attention upon the two person-ages seated thereon, while about it are groupedangels of various hues. Some of the halos are redand some yellow, as is also the case in the lowestscene—this shows the work to be early. Veryskilful is the handling of the nearly triangular spacesat what may be called the four corners of thewindow. An Evangelist is seated in the tallerportion of each, while the rapidly decreasing re-mainder of each space is deftly fitted with hisappropriate symbol—the lion for St. Mark, etc.On both sides of the central panel are two saints,each within a medallion, whose wavy border recallsthose at Assisi and Orvieto. INTERIOR, SIENA CATHEDRALIn the background is the finest occhio of the mosaic period in Italy. Its nine-compartments (see page, ijy) can be clearly distinguished. Note the richly picturedpavement, the cornice of papal heads, etc. Siena or more beautiful chef-doeuvre of the Italian mosaictype exists. Altogether different is the fine occhio at thewestern end, designed in 1549 by Raphaels scholar,Perino del Vaga. It was executed by Pastorino,the versatile pupil of William de Marcillat, whoseskill in glazing was equalled by his remarkablemedals and coins, as well as his coloured portraitsin wax and stucco. Unfortunately, Pastorinos pro-bity was not so well developed as his artistic nature,for we read that having been paid for the window,he tried to decamp without finishing it, causing thecitizens the painful necessity of locking him up inorder to ensure the continuance of his residenceamong them and the completion of his task.
