If the fetus is alive, there is asteady increase from week to week. If it is dead, there is noincrease in the abdominal measurements, and there may be adecrease. For a more extended account of the diagnosis offetal life and death the student is referred to the section on thediseases and death of the fetus. It is obvious that a diagnosis of life or death of the fetus isoften of great importance, as a physician would be inclined toinduce labor to evacuate the womb of a dead fetal bod) if hecould be certain that the child had died ; and a knowledge offetal life or death would influence the treatment of nephritis orof other complicating diseases of gestation.
