Degeneration of the Placental Villi.—The morbid processes thatresult in such grave alteration in the structure of the placental villias to abrogate their physiological activity are, hypertrophy, fibrousand fatty, caseous (phthisical placenta), calcareous, and myxoma-tous degenerations. Placental hemorrhages, placental syphilis,and solid tumors of the placenta have, as a result, the destructionof all or of a part of the placental villi as factors in the nutritionand aeration of the fetal bloo
