-mor. As soon as it has passed fairly into the womb, it issuffered to expand, thereby bringing the ligature athwartthe tumor ; pass it steadily as far as it will go, and thendepressing the whole equally, it may be strangulated byseveral turns, or a single one, which will cross thethread ; traction on the ends of the ligature will thenanswer the same purpose, winding them in either caseround the knob on the handle. If the latter method isadopted, the instrument may be withdrawn at the endof twenty-four hours, leaving the ligature; the vitalityof the tumor will be destroyed by that time. Unless thesurgeon is familiar with its use, however, he had bettertwist it a little daily, and suffer the instrument to remain, the patient lying in bed till the tumor and instrumentcome away together. All that part of the neck of thepolypus that is beyond the ligature, and between it andthe womb, will be as effectually destroyed as though itwere included ; experience proves that it invariablydisappears.
