This plate represents the mode of introducing the trocarand canula, and the dangers incident to it. Fig. 1 showsthe instrument as first introduced ; fig. 2 shows how itshould be depressed, as soon as it enters the cavity, so asto avoid injury of the testicle, which lies behind it. Wherethe instrument enters, will also be seen the way in whichthe tunica vaginalis may be separated from its investingmembranes, which, when there is not due care observed,allows the injection to pass into the cellular tissue between,causing violent inflammation, and sometimes suppurationand sloughing. With care, no operation is safer and sim-pler than this. PLATE D.
