Absolute paralysis of both upper extremities is rare in children. If anentire extremity is paralyzed, the arm either hangs limp by the side of thebody, or is flexed at the elbow. If the arm is lifted it falls by its own weight.Children sometimes refuse to make an effort, or do not understand what iswanted of them. After a few trials it is generally possible to decide whetherthere is a loss of power or mere lack of effort. Total paralysis of the upperextremity occurs either from disease of the brachial plexus, from spinal cordaffections, or from cerebral lesions.
