Of the Fistula Lachrymalis. npHE Fiftula Lachrymalis is generallyJL underflood to be fuch a Diforder ofthe Canals leading from the Eye to theNofe, as obftructs the natural Progrefs ofthe Tears, and makes them trickle down theCheek : But this isonly the firft and mildeflStage of the Difeafe ; in the next, there isa Mucus refembling Matter, and after-wards Matter itfelf difcharged with theTears from the Punffia Lachrymalia, andfometimes from an Orifice broken thro theSkin between the Nofe and Angle of theEye: The laft and worft Degree of it is,when the Matter of the Abfcefs, by itslong Continuance, has not only corrodedthe neighbouring foft Parts, but alfo affectedthe fubjacent Bone. For the better underftanding the Seat andNature of this Diftemper, I have here an-nexed a Reprefentation of the LachrymalDuds. Tn treating of the Fijiula Lachrymalis,mod Writers mention the Inflammationand Ulceration of the Saccus, as beingfometimes the immediate Caufes of it -, but then

Operations ^/Surgery. 383 then they all fuppofe that the Tears be-coming acrid and corrofive, excite the In-flammation and Abfcefs ; though many ofthem imagine that the Tears themfelvesnot finding a way thro the Nafal Duel, do,from ftagnating in the Saccus, corrupt andbecome the Matter difcharged by the PunBaLadwymalia ; but the latter Opinion is modcertainly ill-grounded -, for befides that theTears are not of a Compoiition to become •Pits, it may be obferved almoft at any timeupon prefling the Abfcefs, that the twoFluids appear unmixed -, and with regardto the general Doctrine of the Sharpnefs ofthe Tears producing the Diforder, I thinkit is much to be queftioned; fince theCornea and Tunica Conjunctiva being morefenlible Membranes-than the Siccus, wouldmore readily be offended by them ; but aswe fee they are not in the lead injured,and every Part of an Animal Body is fubjectto Inflammation, &c. from internal Caufes,I believe this external one may be jufllydoubted.
