Title
A trefoil openwork Roman key handle
Description
English: An incomplete cast lead-alloy (?) Roman key (locking) dating to the Roman period (43 - 410 AD). Only the handle remains, the shank and key are missing due old breaks. The handle is formed of an openwork trefoil design, with a protruding two-tiered, globular knop extending from the top of the central loop. The trefoil consists of three outwardly expanded loops, the central loop is elongated and larger than than the outer loops; which are sub-circular, one of which is damaged. The trefoil tapers to a narrow waist, then expands to a triple moulded collar which would have been formerly attached to the shank; the collar has a square cross-section.

The key is light grey-brown in colour and has a modern scratch on the collar.

It measures 72.4 mm in length, 39.5 mm wide, 12.3 mm thick and weighs 87.4 g.

A similar example was found during excavations at Colchester and Crummy (1983, 126, no.4161) suggests that keys of this form all date to post AD 150.
