In this class of men is to be reckoned Mr. EdwinW Houghton, to whom one can ascribe, as he ^\-alks through the businessdistrict of Seattle. Washington, the erection of many of the substantial struc-tures which are the home of the commercial interests of that city. His fathers name was Thomas, an Englishman, who was induced tocome to America by an elder brother about 1850. He became interested ina linancial w ay with the meat packing and shipping industry, which was thenonly in its infancy, w^ith little prophecy of the vast proportions wdiich it wasdestined at this present day to assume.
