From the Lincoln National Life Foundation Matthew Simpson 1811-1884 American Methodist Episcopal Clergyman. Spoke widelyin support of Union cause during the Civil War and de-livered eulogy at Lincolns burial service in Springfield,Illinois. that Stantons, health was a factor to take into considera-tion when the former War Secretarys name was pre-sented for appointment to the Supreme Court bench.Bishop Simpson reported to Stanton as to how the matterof the appointment stood, and Stanton replied on No-vember 3, 1869:My Dear Friend I am under much obligation for your note receivedthis morning. When I heard that your daughter & herhusband were to start so soon for Europe it causedme much regret to have troubled you with any affairof my own, but I hope it gave you no inconvenience.The result of your conference is very plain to me, andgives me no surprise, being what I have expected, andI am quite sure that you will conform to my wish thatthe matter be strictly confidential and confined
