At the right moment, John Hanks and anotherman were marched into the hall, bearing two oldrails, which, Hanks declared, Lincoln had split whenfencing in his fathers farm on the Sangamon, nearlythirty years before. The assemblage went wildover these symbols of their leaders humble toil,and the rails were carried thence to Chicago, wherewomen garlanded them with flowers and wherethey were as proudly displayed as if they had beenthe swords of a military hero. Chicago caught the Lincoln contagion, as thewestern people streamed by the thousands intothe rude, unkempt city. It was the first NationalConvention ever held there, and indeed the secondto be held west of the Alleghanies. The star ofempire, in its westward course, had now risen overthe great valley of the Mississippi, and a conscious-ness of their supreme power in the nation wasdawning upon the stalwart builders of the new states.
