It is an unanswerableargument to this effect, that no candidate for any officewhatever, high or low, has ventured to seek votes on theavowal that he was for giviug up the Union. There havebeen much impugning of motives, and much heated con-troversy as to the proper means and best mode of advanc-ing the Union cause; but on the distinct issue of Unionor no Union the politicians have shown their instinctiveknowledge that there is no diversity among the people.In affording the people the fair opportunity of showing oneto another and to the world this firmness and unanimityof purpose, the election has been of vast value to thenational cause. On the day of election General McClellan re-signed his commission in the army, and the placethns made vacant was filled by the appointment ofGeneral Philip H. Sheridan, a fit type and illustra-tion of the turn in the tide of affairs, which was tosweep from that time rapidly onward to the greatand decisive national triumph.

CHAPTER XVII CHASE AS CHIEF-JUSTICE CHIEF-JUSTICE TANEY died on the 12th day ch. xvii.of October, 1864, during the public rejoicingsthat hailed the success of the Union party at the ism-autumnal elections. He was a man of amiablecharacter, of blameless life, of great learning, ofstainless integrity; yet such is the undiscriminat-ing cruelty with which public opinion executes itsdecrees, that this aged and upright judge wasborne to his grave with few expressions of regret,and even with a feeling not wholly suppressedthat his removal formed a part of the good newswhich the autumn had brought to the upholdersof the Union. Toilsome and irreproachable as hislife had been, so far as purity of intentions wereconcerned, it was marked by one of those mistakeswhich are never forgiven.
