Reproduced from eugraviu^ (2^^^^^--:?2^,,^?^^^-*tA The seventh President of the United States and one ot the most picturesqueand striking figures in its history in the United States, for there was a stronganti-slavery sentiment in Texas, and theinstitution, abolished while Texas was apart of Mexico, had been restored onlyafter the Texan rebellion against Mexicanauthority in 1836. Whatever anti-slaverysentiment existed in Texas was warmlyseconded by Great Britain, and the policyof Southern public men was to make as friend of Calhouns, wrote in December,1842, a letter advocating the immediate an-nexation of Texas, and referring to thedanger that British influence might bringabout the abolition of slavery in the region.Somewhat later a letter purporting to comefrom a Marylander in London, but traced,it is said, to Duft Green, editor of aDemocratic organ opposed to Van Buren, 44 Pearson^s Magazine

Attorney-General of the United States from1833—38, and acting Secretary of War from1836-37 charged that Great Britain wasmaking active efforts to bringabout the abolition of slavery inTexas. Gilmers letter was ad-dressed to Duff Green and pub-lished in a Baltimore paper onJanuary 10, 18i3. Behind Gil-mer and Green, Calhoun was sus-pected. So the letter of Gilmerwas sent to Jackson at the Her-mitage through RepresentativeAaron V. Bro^\Ti of Tennessee, afriend of- Jackson and supposedsupporter of Van Buren. Jack-son was asked to express hisopinion upon the question at issue,and he wrote a letter heartily ap-proving Gilmers suggestion ofimmediate annexation.
