Thereare two pictures of the old bridge in Mr. Squiersbook, and although wire rope has replaced the oldcables that the Incas made from maguey fibre, it isstill the most unwelcome feature of the road fromthe point of view of the mules. One of our mules simply would not cross thebridge. No amount of pushing and pulling, beatingand shouting, would make him budge an inch.Finally he was blindfolded and a rope tied to eachfront leg. His hind legs were tied securely together,to prevent him from kicking, and by alternatelypulling the ropes attached to his front feet, he wasforced in a most ignominious manner to come ontothe bridge and go a third of the way across. Theshells comprised various species and varieties of Bulimulus and asingle species of Clausilia. The latter was described by Dr. H. A.Pilsbry.
