GUIDE TO RYE. 3J Hudibras, and that the first of his family to settle itiRye were the brothers William and Daniel Butler, men-tioned in these inscriptions. The name Butler, how-ever, is common in the Rye Registers from theircommencement in 1538. From the close of the sixteenth century to the middleof the eighteenth, the Grebells were the most influentialfamily in the town of Rye, and several of them are buriedin Saint Clares Chapel ; but a melancholy interest isattached to tlie record of the last:— Here Iveth the body of ALLEN GREBELL/Esqre., Who, after having served the office of Mayor of this town for ten j-ears, with the greatest honour and integrity, fell by the cruel stab of a sanguinary butcher, on the 17th of March, 1742, aged 50. He left issue one Son and one Daughter. The butchers name was Breeds, and the particulars oftlie murder are given in another part of this work. Mr. Thomas Lamb, who was the first of this family
